File of Life

File of Life Program

In an emergency, having important medical information readily available can help first responders provide appropriate care more quickly.

The File of Life is a recognizable red magnetic pouch designed to keep essential health and emergency contact information in one convenient place. It can include details such as medical conditions, medications, allergies, physician information, and the names and phone numbers of family members or emergency contacts.

Who Can Benefit From a File of Life?

The File of Life isn’t only for older adults. It can be helpful for people of any age, particularly those who have ongoing medical conditions, take multiple medications, have serious health concerns, or live with developmental or other disabilities that could make communicating during an emergency difficult.

It can also provide additional peace of mind for individuals who live alone or family members and caregivers who want important information easily accessible if an emergency occurs.

Where Should the File of Life Be Kept?

Place the red magnetic File of Life pouch on the outside of your refrigerator, where it can be easily seen and accessed by emergency responders. Avoid placing it inside a drawer, cabinet, or other location where emergency personnel may not know to look.

Keep Your Information Current

A File of Life is most helpful when the information inside is accurate and up to date.

Consider completing the form in pencil so information can easily be changed when needed. Review it periodically and update any changes to medications, dosages, medical conditions, physicians, allergies, or emergency contacts.

A few minutes spent keeping your File of Life current could provide emergency responders with valuable information when every minute matters.
